Training When You Have Zero Motivation

Let me say something nobody wants to hear: I don't believe in motivation. I've watched too many smart, capable people sit on their couch waiting for it to show up like a delivery driver. It doesn't come. And by the time they realize that, they've lost another six months.

What I believe in is the appointment. You don't 'feel like' showing up to the dentist. You go because it's on the calendar and you respect the calendar. Training is the same. The trick is making the appointment so non-negotiable that you stop having a conversation with yourself about it.

The two-minute rule

On the days where everything in you says 'not today,' the rule is: get to the gym, lace the shoes, and do two minutes. If after two minutes you still want to go home, you can leave. I'll be honest with you — I've never had a client actually leave. Once you're moving, the chemistry catches up. Motivation is downstream of action, not upstream.

Lower the bar on bad days

A 40% workout you actually do is worth more than a perfect workout you skipped. On the days you're toast, cut the volume in half. Do the warm-up. Hit one heavy single. Walk on the treadmill for ten minutes. Leave. The streak matters more than the session.

Borrow somebody else's belief

The reason coaching works isn't the program. It's that on the day you can't believe in yourself, somebody else is doing it for you. That's the whole job. If you don't have a coach yet, find one person who texts you 'how'd today go?' That alone changes everything.

What I tell my clients

  • Schedule training like it's a meeting with your boss.
  • Set the bar at 'show up' — not 'crush it.'
  • Track sessions completed, not how you felt about them.
  • Talk to yourself the way you'd talk to a friend who's struggling.

Motivation is a bonus. Discipline is the floor. And the discipline grows from one decision: today, regardless of how I feel, I'm honoring the appointment. Do that for 12 weeks and you'll never have to negotiate with yourself again.
